We left the Grand Canyon and headed to Grants, New Mexico to see the ice caves and lava rock. We stopped along the way at the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert. It is best known for its vast deposits of petrified wood. It is rumored that a Spanish explorer is rumored to have named the area El Desierto Pintado(the Painted Desert) because the hills looked like they were painted with the colors of the sunset. It was really very beautiful and an interesting park. They have a Junior Ranger Program where kids can earn a badge and a patch if they complete the activity booklet. My girls were excited to become Junior Rangers and get their badges.
